Who Is Jesus Christ? God, Savior, and the Eternal Word

Loading views…
Every generation must answer the question Jesus asked His disciples: Who do you say that I am? (Matthew 16:13–17* Matthew 16:15 Who do you say that I am?

Matthew 16:16 You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.) Some see Jesus as a moral teacher, a prophet, a revolutionary, or an inspiring example. The New Testament presents a larger answer. Jesus is the eternal Word made flesh, the Son of God, the promised Messiah, the Savior of the world, and the Lord over life and death.

Jesus Is the Eternal Word

John 1 does not begin with Bethlehem but with eternity. (John 1:1–18* John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
John 1:14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.
)
The Word was with God and was God, and through Him all things were made. Then the Word became flesh and lived among us. Jesus is the One through whom God’s glory is revealed.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” — John 1:1

Jesus Is the Promised Messiah

The Old Testament promised a coming King, servant, shepherd, and Redeemer. Jesus announces good news to the poor, freedom to the oppressed, and the arrival of God’s kingdom (Luke 4:16–21* Luke 4:18 He has anointed Me to bring good news to the poor and proclaim release to the captives.
Luke 4:21 Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.
)
. He is not merely offering advice for a better life; He is bringing God’s saving reign.

“Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” — Luke 4:21

Jesus Is Truly Human

The Gospels show Jesus becoming tired, hungry, sorrowful, and compassionate. He wept at Lazarus’s tomb and experienced anguish before the cross. His humanity was not an appearance. He entered our broken world without sin and can sympathize with our weakness (Hebrews 4:15* We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.).

“We do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.” — Hebrews 4:15

Jesus Is Truly Divine

At the same time, Jesus forgives sins, receives worship, commands nature, raises the dead, and speaks with unique authority. Thomas called Him My Lord and my God. Hebrews says that the Son is the exact representation of God’s being. The New Testament proclaims both His humanity and His deity (John 20:24–31; Hebrews 1:1–4* John 20:28 Thomas answered and said to Him, My Lord and my God!
Hebrews 1:3 He is the exact representation of God’s nature.
)
.

“My Lord and my God!” — John 20:28

Jesus Is the Savior

Humanity’s deepest problem is not merely lack of information. It is sin: rebellion, guilt, false worship, and broken fellowship with God. Jesus came to save His people from their sins (Matthew 1:21; Romans 5:6–11* Matthew 1:21 He will save His people from their sins.
Romans 5:8 While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
)
. At the cross, He gave Himself for sinners. His resurrection declares that death did not defeat Him.

“You shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.” — Matthew 1:21

Salvation is received through repentance and faith, not earned through religious performance. We cannot repair our relationship with God by presenting a better version of ourselves. Christ calls us to receive mercy and follow Him.

Following Jesus

Following Jesus means trusting Him, listening to His words, turning from sin, loving God and neighbour, forgiving others, carrying the cross, and persevering in hope (Luke 9:23–24; John 14:15* Luke 9:23 If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow Me.
John 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
)
. His grace comes first, but grace creates a new life. The disciple obeys because salvation has been received.

“If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” — Luke 9:23

Conclusion

Who is Jesus Christ? He is the eternal Word who became flesh, the promised Messiah, truly human and truly divine, the Savior who died and rose again, and the Lord who calls every person to faith. He is not only someone to study. He is the One before whom we must decide whether we will bow, trust, and follow.

“I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me.” — John 14:6
